This picture was inspired by the boy from Cleveland who killed himself and schoolmates, Asa Coon. A reporter leaked out a picture of the dead boy lying on the floor of the schoolroom onto the internet, and a flood of comments came in calling him a freak and evil and that he should die for doing such a thing. A lot of the comments were disjointed and odd, and in combination with the (admittedly gruesome) picture, it made an impression. this picture needs a little explanation. It is a good representation of the style of drawing I usually do, but this one actually means something, whereas usually I just draw for fun. The text of the soldier's balloon comes directly from a letter sent by a young Confederate soldier to his family in the American Civil War. It's a statement of his homesickness - he hasn't seen any place quite like his hometown, Buncombe, Tennessee. It gave me the idea for this drawing.… Continue
