possible book endings

ok the title is basically what i mean.

i'm writing a book about an olden day hero who in the age where guns are beginning to trhive he uses the sword to fight enemy. he ends up getting a band of followers together which include a theif,a marksman (who is female),a bear of a guy who weilds a broadsword and a medic who is a little insane.

i have the whole book planned out but i can't figure out what to dop about the ending and i am stuck between two choices.

1: at a final battle the hero is killed but the battle is won. it would then end with his followers staring at his gravestone and then leaving him in peace at last

OR

2: The hero is wounded but kills the bad guy before he blacks out.. he wakes up in a hospital bed 3 days later to find his followers by his side and the theif asleep at his side. he then recovers and the sotry ends as a cliffhanger
