Idiots with Tattoos they don't get
I bailed from work yesterday and went to the beach. It was cold and windy, perfect. Usually that kind of weather keeps the morons away and just the thoughtful show up to walk or look at the water.
I am sitting on a blanket, drinking my coffee when this guy walks by with this pretty cool tattoo. It's something called a mudra which is a hand gesture used in Buddhist meditation. The one he has is a Ahamkara. The thumb is over the middle knuckle of the index finger, the index finger is bend and the last three fingers are up but slightly curled. I am sure if you'd see it you'd know it.
So I am a Buddhist practitioner and this catches my eye right away. I stop him and say "cool tatt, what made you think of that mudra?" I am thinking he'll say that it gives him strength (it is used when you feel fear or kind of puny).
He say's, oh that's a buddhist OK sign, cool huh?
Well OMFG! Like I do so many times a day, I have a choice. Do I enlighten this fool or just move on. Now he spots one of my tattoos, on my ankle, the Chinese character for Love. He says "what does that mean" so I tell him and explain how the character is in three sections for breath, grace and heart and together it means love. He asks if I have an others so i show him the Picasso Peace Dove on my back. It's a well recognized sketch by the master and this guy says "cute birdie" and laughs.
I just got up, grabbed my shit and walked away.

Ok, admittedly, I wouldn't have got the Ahamkara or what it meant (because I am not as learned as you) but I certainly would get a tattoo of something I didn't know the meaning of. I wouldn't get a tattoo full stop come to think of it. But I DO know that the dove with an olive branch in the beak means peace.
Eek. That was pointless. I've made myself look almost a stupid as him.

There are a couple of sketches he did of the dove, the olive branch is one, the garland of flowers is another. I chose the flowers, I am girly girl that way. (ha!)

maybe its the hour of night but for some odd reason i found that really REALLY funny. With our powers combined we create mega peace! So much peace you can calm a car alarm!

If you are going to put something on your body that will never go away I think you are obligated to know what it means, if you don't then yah, you are an idiot. You don't have to know everything there is to know in order to know what something you have tattooed to you means.
My Asian roomies in college were exchange students and used to walk around with t-shirts that had random words in English printed on them because they too thought the foreign characters looked cool. Cuts both ways my self-deprecating for the purpose of sarcasm friend.
Google is an amazing thing. The true measure of intellect is not the database of facts you have stored in your head, anyone can memorize facts particularly if it's a topic of interest. I may value certain mental functions you don't,

saw a movie where this big tough guy gets a Chinese (ithink) tattoo that he thinks mean strength or something old Chinese (ithink) guy comes up and tells him it really means he's gay.
