Ask A Ninja Fans

I issue this challenge to you:

Construct a 'go bag' or 'bug out bag', brainstorm and tell me what you would have in yours. Remember weight saving is as important as possible.

Do you have any useful insight into major disasters? Do you have an interesting comment to make, or perhaps a better solution to two problems?

Scenario?
Well let’s just say, there’s been a natural or man made disaster, and social order is breaking down, like in New Orleans. Your objective is to leave the disaster area.

I'll go first:

3x Long lasting ration packs, US MRE's are the best on the market.
1x Book for discerning edible survival food.

Nothing. I am a ninja and can therefor escape.

So.... that’s…. training, good work.

You'll need some sort of training and preperation. Maybe:
1. first aid
2. self defence/martial arts
3. disaster prepare committee (which probably exists)

What are you going to do with 3 condoms and 100 lion bars? Actually, forget i asked.... ew.

1. Humm glock with no ammo, what type is it anyways? You know they do a full auto version for the US police... yea... POLICE!
2. The regional map is only good if your going to escape 'into' the region not 'out' of it. The pencils good though, good for maps, note taking.
3. The water is good because you always get thirsty, but to prepare for the unknown you should take some chlorine tablets and maybe a box of filter straws. That way, you carry less weight for more benefit. I would still carry some water though, maybe in a camel back.
4. Energy food is good but you don't want the energy you get out weighed by the food you carry.
5. The knife is a good choice, used for food, cutting clothes/seatbelts etc
6. What about a torch, the first thing that usually goes is the electricity, considering it gets dark around 7, and you have a hole 2-4 hours ahead of you.

So interesting that you cannot reply :P

There have always been two different types of survival:
1. Bring everything you need
2. Find everything you need.

The latter is more successful in practice. But that’s good and well thought through, you'd need some sort of transport for that equipment though. You may need some sort of hunting weapon or flairs also. GPS and compass are also needed.

Reserve Officers' Training Corps.... we just have the cadets.

Well yea you missed out a whole load of stuff but that was beyond the scope of your list. For example, you need clothes! What about thermals, shoes or waterproofs? Most important of all, a sleeping bag. But that’s a whole Bergen full of gear! I would prefer to stick to the disaster survival stuff and find everything except food. Of coarse i would have appropriate clothes.

Start with an exact idea of its purpose. You may even think of scenarios like the one i wrote above.
Have you ever played Half-Life 2? That has a surprising amount of survival type stuff in it for a game. For example, people used to shout massages to each other in the Italian mountains when they were resisting the Germans it was because they didn’t have radios. That’s one thing in the game.

I love everything about that game it really is as inventive as like 1984.

The character you play in the game always carries a crowbar. He also has a special hazard suit with a Geiger counter in it, as well as a torch and other stuff. Its also doubles as body armour. I have a GPS navigator, and i can save certain maps to it, for convenience.

Also, what is the use of combat boots, their so heavy loud and restrictive. I know they say "an army marches on its feet" but i think some climbing type shoes are better. The radio is good, especially if you wanna hear what the disaster response guys are saying. It may be illegal but their the guys that would know exactly where the dangers are. I would also have a climbing harnes, just in case. Personally i would like to add a gun to this list but its pretty impossible for me... It should be really light and reliable, but with ammo thats easy to find :)
