hmm. . . somewhat correct, they stopped battles in the same way the navy seals stopped battles. . . death . . .
however during much of the more recent history of the ninja, they were hired assassins specifically trained to take out samuri and military forces, why is this important:
the Ninja arose from the ranks of common men wishing to defend themselves against the oppressive tokugawa shogunate, they trained themselves in ways of self defense and murder specifically to protect their families against the samuri who arose into a position of power that left them untouchable to anyone but the emporer and shogun.
yes so the respect of life is there as they battled those who presented themselves above humans of other classes. the history is loong and complex but by their hands many armies were crushed without battle which in the long run is better for the commen man, think of the ninja as a more bloodthirsty robin hood.
however by the meiji era the wars had ended and the new commerce with the west had begun to solidify the country into a cohesive nation (so its not the best example but watching last samuri really can introduce you to the base concept of this time period).
so durin this time the ninja clans became assassins for the richer families and almost like a secret ops . . . so secret it was completely outside of the government in all but the source of wages. unfortunatly the ninja as well as the samuri and many other colorful images of the japanese past were obliterated by the end of this period luckily to be resurrected by hirohito.
not saying your wrong just thought more elaboration was needed

I think sonji needs to go back to ninja grade school and learn how to spell. :D I'll go ahead and tell you my favorite killing move of all time, and I'll use you as my dummy. :D First I leap out from the shadows, hook-kick your sword from your hands, grab your neck with my left hand and lift you up off the ground, cut your head off with my katana, and before your headless body hits the ground, I hack your bottom half off, let it fall, sidekick your torso away, and then kick a field goal with your dismembered head. Then I sheath my blade and return to the shadows to wait for my next bad-spelling victim. Hey, you said the more gruesome the better. P.S.: all that happened within 5 seconds. How? I'm a ninja.
